Day 12 Project Iron Wolf Pt2

25 Jan 2008. Now that it is 35deg outside its time to start tearing down the front Dana 60 axles. Thanks to Priate4X4.com and Bill Vista I have all the info to rebuild these bad boys by my self. I will try to photo document this whole rebuild. Plus I can use it to help me reassemble everything back in its right place and order.

Here we go. Starting on the right side.

Manual lockout cap removed. You can see the spring and the cam that will allow the axles to be locked or in free position.

Bolts and lockout removed. Now the snap ring needs to be removed. All spines look good so far. No marring or broken spines.

Snap ring removed and flange slides right out.

Well, no tools in my tool box to get this 2 1/2 nut off. Time to clean up and head to Sears and get a socket to fit this nut and continue the tear down. I feel this will not be the last time I have to stop due to the lack of tools. Just another reason to buy tools.

Day 12 Project Iron Wolf Pt1

Jan 25 2008 Its time to put a lot of effort into the inside of Iron Wolf. I pretty much have everything out of the inside now.

I have to move Iron Wolf into the garage. The city of St. George said im not allowed to have an disassembled vehicle next to our house. I have like a week to put it into my garage or I get fined $25 a day. I've been spending a lot of time preping the inside so I can get some paint in there.

I found my only cancer spot. Will have to open it up get rid of the cancer and weld in some patches.

The bed is in really good condition. Just light surface rust.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will start filling up the inside with the doner parts. My flying schedule is going to be getting pretty busy in Febuary so I have to get a lot done now.

Here are my other holes. As you can see this body is in great shape.

Day 11 Project Iron Wolf

19 Jan 2008
Everything stripped from the doner Scout.

All the major parts that I will keep or put on E-bay.

Nothing else to take off. Put on the trailer and ready for the dump.

A sad way to end a Scout's life.

Day 9 Project Irnwolf Pt. 3

15 Jan 2008. Its the six hour point and it is time to roll the chassis out from under the Body.
The frame is on its way.

So far so good. the rear tires just have to clear the front jack point.

The rear tires did clear the front jack point. Only by 1/2 inch. A levitating Scout body.

My little prize. A little dirty. OK, a whole lot of dirt. The power washer will have fun with this frame and engine.

Its about 7:30pm. The sun is going down and the lights are on. The frame is out, the body is floating in my driveway, I'm sore, and all is good. I have to do this one more time.

Day 9 Project Irnwolf Pt. 2

15 Jan 2008

Tires are back on the frame. Its time to raise the body towards the heavens. I have to get it high enough to clear the rear tires.

Rear shot of the body at its hightest point. Hope its high enough. I hope the tape measure does not lie.

Day 9 Project Irnwolf Pt. 1

15 Jan 2008

Now that everything is disconected its time to work on raising the body.

gas tank. will reuse it.

Day 8 Project Irnwolf

14 Jan 2008. Today I had to drive to North Las Vegas to pick up my one ton axles. These axles had to come from the east coast. They are from a 1986 Dodge 4x4 truck.

Will be stripping all the crap off, pulling off calipers, and starting the long process of grinding. I have to remove the welded on spring perches. Should be fun.

Driver side.

I need to get a picture of the Dana 44 next to these Dana 60. They are huge. I had to make some dolly's so I could move this massive axle. It weighs 600Lbs. Soon I will be putting in some 4.88 gears and an ARB locker. I will be rebuilding the kingpins.

A Dana 60 Rear end. Those drum breaks are on their way out and will be replaced with disk breaks. This rear end will also be receiving a 4.88 gear set and ARB lockers.

Day 6 Project Irnwolf

The Doner for Irnwolf

The 2nd of December I purchased this 1979 Scout from Colorado City for two hundred dollars. It was sitting in a field for three years. The body is in bad shape but it is a complete Scout. I will take the body off this frame and keep everything else. I will put the body of Irnwolf onto this frame.
Nice rust.

Nice dent on left side. All the wiring is in great shape.

Maybe I should keep the interior. NOT!

Engine is in great shape and even runs.

Bad cancer.

Day 5 Project Irnwolf

January 2nd 2008. It's a nice warm day at 45 deg. Time to get to work on Irnwolf. Today my plan was to get the front clip off Irnwolf and getter closer to floating the body off the frame.
The hood, doors, and finders all removed. It took me about five hours to get to this point.

Finders and hood in awesome shape. No rust and one small dent in left finder.

Front clip removed.

Closer to floating the body. It's taken me about seven hours to get to this point.

All the pieces removed. all with no rust and no damage. So far so good.
